You don't need to spend a fortune to get a great blade steel. These mid-range options deliver serious performance at a price that won't break the bank.
The Sweet Spot in Steel
Entry-level stainless steels are easy to maintain but leave performance on the table. Super steels are impressive but often overkill for everyday use. Mid-range steels hit the sweet spot — meaningfully better edge retention and toughness than budget options, without the premium price tag or demanding maintenance of top-tier steels.
D2 Tool Steel
D2 is a semi-stainless tool steel with high carbon and chromium content. It's not fully stainless — it will develop a patina over time if neglected — but it holds an edge exceptionally well for its price point. D2 is tough, wear-resistant, and a favorite among working knife users who want performance without paying for premium steels.
The trade-off: it's harder to sharpen than entry stainless and needs a bit more maintenance attention.
VG-10
VG-10 is a Japanese stainless steel that punches well above its weight. It takes a very fine edge, holds it longer than most steels in its price range, and is fully stainless — making it low maintenance. You'll find it on many Japanese-made folders and fixed blades, and it has a devoted following among collectors who appreciate its balance of performance and practicality.
14C28N
Developed by Sandvik, 14C28N is a Scandinavian stainless steel optimized for knife blades. It offers excellent corrosion resistance, good toughness, and takes a sharp edge easily. It's a step up from AUS-8 and competes well with VG-10 in many respects. Kershaw and other major brands use it extensively, which speaks to its reliability at scale.
Which Should You Choose?

- VG-10 — if you want a fine edge with minimal upkeep and a proven track record
- 14C28N — if you want a versatile, corrosion-resistant steel that's easy to sharpen
